Hair Structure (SMP)
- Hair is primarily composed of fibrous proteins called keratin, which give the hair its strength and elasticity. From the outside in, each hair strand has three main parts: the outer cuticle, consisting of a layer of thin scales that covers the inner cortex; and at the center, the medulla, comprised of a soft, often hollow core. The arrangement and texture of these structures determine the hair's appearance and feel. The health of our hair, including its structure and texture, can be affected by a balanced diet, lifestyle choices, genetics, and environmental factors.
- The composition of the hair typically consists of:
1. Cuticle: Approximately 10-15% of the hair's structure
2. Cortex: Comprising around 80-90% of the hair's composition
3. Medulla: This soft innermost layer, if present, typically accounts for about 5-15% of the hair's diameter, though not all hair contains a medulla.
These proportions can vary between individuals and are impacted by genetic and other factors.
